New ASHRAE Fellows have been announced!

Please join us in congratulating Charles Eley (pictured on the left) and Fred Bauman (right)! Their nominations to be elevated to ASHRAE Fellows has been approved at the Houston Summer Conference. They will be honored at the 2019 Winter Conference during the Plenary Session. We hope that some Golden Gate Members can join-in and show their support for Charles and Fred at the Plenary in Atlanta!

How do you become a fellow? There’s a nomination process, which is reviewed at the Society level. This includes updating your ASHRAE bio, including recommendation letters, and ultimately demonstrating that you are a person of excellence within our industry, who has made significant contributions in the arts and sciences of HVAC&R. Fred has authored 1 book, 34 papers, and 13 articles. Charles has authored 2 books, 20 papers, and 12 articles… these members have been a great influence on our industry and we couldn’t be prouder that they are Golden Gate Members!

Charles Eley is an architect, mechanical engineer and author with 40 years experience in energy efficient and sustainable design. His latest book is Design Professionals Guide to Zero Net Energy Buildings (Island Press 2016). During his career, Mr. Eley has made significant contributions to the California energy standards, ASHRAE Standard 90.1, and energy codes in Hong Kong, Hawaii, Guam, American Samoa and Australia. He has also developed a number of important technical manuals and publications; served as the founding executive director of the Collaborative for High Performance Schools; developed a number of energy analysis software applications; and has served as energy consultant for a number of landmark green buildings. Mr Eley currently writes, serves on non-profit boards, provides specialized consulting, and teaches classes on building energy efficiency and green technologies. Fred Bauman, P.E., is a Project Scientist at the Center for the Built Environment at UC Berkeley. His research interests include advanced low-energy HVAC systems, such as radiant, underfloor air distribution (UFAD), displacement ventilation (DV), and personal comfort systems (PCS), as well as room air distribution, thermal comfort, building energy use, ventilation and indoor air quality, laboratory and field measurement methods, and natural ventilation. Fred is currently leading CBE’s research program on advanced integrated systems with a focus on radiant slab cooling (thermally activated building systems, TABS). He is the Principal Investigator for a $3M, 4-year research grant starting in the summer of 2015 funded by California’s EPIC Program, “Optimizing Radiant Systems for Energy Efficiency and Comfort.” Fred previously led the development of CBE’s world renowned research program on underfloor air distribution. Fred was the author of the first Underfloor Air Distribution (UFAD) Design Guide, published by ASHRAE in 2003, and was a lead contributing author, as a voting member of ASHRAE TRG7-UFAD, of the newly revised UFAD Guide, published by ASHRAE in 2013. He is an active member of ASHRAE, having served as Chair of TC 5.3 (Room Air Distribution), 1995-97, and Chair of SPC 113-1990 (Method of Testing for Room Air Diffusion), 1995-2002. He received the ASHRAE Distinguished Service Award in 1997.
