California is going through one of its most seismic shifts in building energy policy and design. The move towards full decarbonization of the building stock has started and the policy, technical and financial implications are being developed under our feet. We will share how heat pumps and other forms of electric heating can displace our long time carbon sources of heat. These systems already available and many are cost effective today. Come discuss this shift and how it will impact your building or construction project with one of the industry's leading experts.

This seminar will include details of how heat pump systems work and how to design residential, commercial and industrial buildings to take advantage of currently available heat pump systems. We will include case studies of heat pump systems and how they can fit into low energy buildings. We will also cover how best to handle Title 24 shortcomings as it relates to heat pump systems.

Instructors:

Peter Rumsey
Point Energy Innovations

Peter is the founder and CEO of Point Energy Innovations, a new consulting firm focused on working directly with owners and developers on the next generation of profitable, high performance and net zero energy buildings.  He has received numerous awards including the Renewable Energy Innovators of the Year and ASHRAE's prestigious Award of Engineering Excellence - only given four other times in ASHRAE's 100-year history. He is a graduate of UC Berkeley and teaches part time at Stanford University.  

Ethan Heil
Point Energy Innovations

Ethan works at the intersection of energy, sustainability and the built environment. He strives to enable more efficient, healthy, and productive building environments through the application of rigorous analysis to the design process. Ethan has extensive experience in mechanical and PV systems design, building energy modeling and simulation, energy monitoring and verification, life cycle assessment, demand side energy management, renewable energy finance, and triple-bottom-line analysis. He leverages this experience to promote the development and operation of holistic, comfortable, low-energy building solutions. In pursuit of these goals, he has developed novel modeling tools for evaluating: solar PV financing alternatives, district-level carbon neutral planning, filtration system life cycle costs, and the life cycle cost and environmental impacts of low-income, affordable housing. With a background in environmental science and ecology to complement his engineering studies, Ethan is always looking for ways to incorporate sustainable building techniques that benefit both the built and natural environments.
